FROM THE PRESIDENT\u2019S DESK: Revolutionary Ideas Shaping the Future of Ports<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As I reached out to Siri the other day for directions to a meeting, I\nwas stunned by how quickly \u201cshe\u201d knew what I was asking and spit out the\ndirections. After I arrived without incident to my destination, I was struck by\nhow much times have changed. Even just 10 years ago, heading downtown for a\nmeeting involved printing directions, high hopes for not getting stuck in\ntraffic and the fear of not finding a parking spot. Today, I just manage all of\nthese things on my iPhone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is my last Seaports <\/em>\u201cFrom\nthe President\u2019s Desk\u201d message before I retire on October 16. It is bittersweet\nin that revolutionary changes are not just happening with our smart phones but\nto everything \u2013 including ports operations. While I look forward to the next\nchapter in my life, I will miss the everyday excitement and explosive growth of\nthe port industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty-four years ago, when I first started working for AAPA, I would\nnot have been able to conceive of the kinds of things that are revolutionizing\nthis industry. The port industry, to me, has always been remarkable and has had\nan incredible impact on our quality of life; but the pace at which these things\nare evolving is astounding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seaports are exciting, vibrant and have a significant impact on the\neconomy and to the communities that they serve. However, ports are also leaders\nand facilitators of more than just goods movement. Our port members are setting\nthe trends and raising the bar when it comes to so many critical issues \u2013 from\nthe environment to data management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This issue of the magazine is dedicated to the topic of revolutionizing\nports and centers around four areas including data informed decision making,\nsustainable operations, new equipment driving drastic operational changes, and\ndigital transformation. In all of these areas, innovation is driving smart\nsolutions and clear results. From drastic reductions in air pollution emissions\nto the transfer of data both quickly and seamlessly, revolutionary innovations\nare driving significant results. I encourage you to take the time to read each\nof these articles \u2013 not simply to stay informed but to avail yourself of the\nexpertise and best practices available this issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I leave my post as president of AAPA, I will continue to watch with\nawe how well our members lead dynamic change and add value to the communities\nand nations they serve. It makes me even more enthusiastic about ports. I have\nloved the opportunity to be a \u201cvoice\u201d for the industry to those that don\u2019t know\nor understand ports and to have the opportunity to tell remarkable stories like\nwhat is included in this issue of the magazine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am proud to have served the industry for so long and honored to have been entrusted with leading this remarkable association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
