Ports are vital to thriving communities and showcase that importance in numerous ways<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a major driver of jobs, economy and natural\nresources, ports play an important role in community life. Sharing that importance\nwith the community isn\u2019t always easy, especially since much of what happens\ndoes so outside the public eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These types of actions\nrarely impact the bottom line directly. But it is the right thing to do, said\nJudith Adams, vice president of marketing for the Alabama State Port Authority<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre we motivated on a self-serving,\ncommunity-promotion level in these\ninitiatives? No,\u201d said Adams. \u201cDo we promote it afterward in the community? Not\novertly. We do quietly report on the initiatives within our community via\nstakeholder newsletters, social media (primarily followed by our stakeholders)\nand our industry magazine. Those reports are geared toward saying thank you and\nrecognizing unsung heroes. If the press picks it up, so be it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community involvement helps to remove some of the mystery \u2013\nand that can pay off in the long run. \u201cThe role of a port, especially a public\nport, is not to move cargo,\u201d said Glenn Wiltshire, acting director at Port\nEverglades<\/strong>. \u201cThat\u2019s part of our mission statement, but it\u2019s also\nengagement with the community. There\u2019s a percentage of the public that says,\n\u2018We don\u2019t know what goes on in there.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The costs of involvement pay dividends in many areas, said\nRobert Peek, JAXPORT <\/strong>director and general manager, sales\nand marketing. \u201cEmployees are proud to work for a company that is a good\ncorporate citizen, which helps with employee retention. We also find that\ncustomers are increasingly interested in doing business with socially\nresponsible companies as they look to improve the social impact of their supply\nchains. In addition, community involvement helps strengthen the partnerships\nthat we have with customers and port partners, allowing us to work together to\nbuild a brighter future for all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That brighter future comes by tying the needs of the community into the resources of the port, creating a win for all involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
