The accomplishments of the behind-the-scenes stars who help seaports flourish are coming to light and earning acclaim<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether they staff a\nsecurity gate, or prepare statistical reports, or oversee a $100-million development, seaport star performers\ndo so much more than put in eight hours per day. They do their jobs well, and\nthen go over and above. They might develop a time-saving\ndevice, volunteer at coastal cleanups, testify before Congress on funding,\nteach elementary school children about trade, mentor new industry hires, or\nmarshal relief supplies for hurricane-torn\nneighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These heroes sometimes remain hidden, but other times their accomplishments even earn recognition from outside organizations. Here are just a few of our 2019 hidden heroes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Citizen Diplomacy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In June, Port of Los Angeles\u2019 trade development manager,\nNorman Arikawa, was honored as 2019 Outstanding Citizen Diplomat by the\nInternational Visitors Council of Los Angeles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of a 40-year career, Arikawa has worked on many city\ntrade development efforts, coordinated innumerable visits by foreign officials,\nhelped develop the Presidential \u201cE Star\u201d Award-winning\nTrade Connect program for small- and medium-sized businesses, and served on numerous trade\ncommittees, councils and opportunity network initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Janet Elliott, president of the International Visitors Council, said, \u201cNorman exemplifies outstanding citizen diplomacy through meetings he has arranged over the years\u2026sharing information and ideas on issues such as trade policy, security, safety and environmental issues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Container Sector<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In September, Chris Lytle\nreceived a lifetime achievement award from the Containerization and Intermodal\nInstitute, acknowledging a 53-year career\nthat included positions at the helms of Port of Oakland<\/strong> and, prior\nto that, Port of Long Beach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lytle said, \u201cI\u2019ve had a\nlong and satisfying career and this recognition makes it easier to step away.\nI\u2019m leaving the industry with great memories and pride in what I\u2019ve\naccomplished alongside hundreds of wonderful colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018Connie Award\u2019 is presented annually to maritime industry leaders who have made substantial and long-term contributions to trade, transportation and container shipping. Lytle is credited with leading Oakland to record cargo volume in recent years, and has a track record of introducing industry service innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
