Industry Optimistic About Future of Nuclear Energy at Ports
AAPA submitted comments to MARAD in response to a Request for Information on the commercial development of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology in the maritime transportation system.
AAPA President & CEO Sang Yi noted that SMRs can provide ports with firm baseload power to support growing electricity demand without diverting power from other critical sectors. The comments included 13 specific recommendations to the federal government, covering areas such as a technology-inclusive SMR policy framework, federal grants and loans, safety standards, and streamlined permitting processes.
The topic will be explored further during a keynote panel at AAPA’s Annual Convention in New Orleans, taking place September 28-30.
