Freeport Channel Milestone Expands Vessel Access, Strengthens U.S. Supply Chains

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District and Port Freeport marked a major milestone in the Freeport Harbor Channel Improvement Project with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 28, 2026. The federal navigation project deepens and partially widens the harbor channel, improving access for larger global vessels carrying energy products, vehicles, containers, chemicals, agricultural commodities, and heavy equipment. Congress authorized the project under Section 7002 of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act of 2014, with Port Freeport as the non-federal sponsor. The ceremony included remarks from Port Freeport CEO Phyllis Saathoff, USACE Galveston District Commander Col. David W. Dake, and AAPA President and CEO Sang Yi.
